Regular performances of BICCHU KAGURA.
BICCHU KAGURA is a form of kagura from the Bicchu region in western Okayama Prefecture. It has been handed down as a performing art that invites the gods to enjoy the dance.
BICCHU KAGURA is dedicated every year from autumn to winter at the village shrine.
It is rarely seen by the general public, but performances are held once a month in CHUSEI-YUMEGAHARA in BISEI town, Ibara City, Okayama Prefecture, as "BISEI Mikazuki KAGURA". ('Mikazuki' means Crescent Moon).
The programme includes "OROCHI-TAIJI", a performance to exterminate two giant snakes, "KIBITSU-MAI", the prototype of the legend of Momotaro, and "Okuninushi no Mai", a popular dance in which sweets are given away.
A simple workshop has been prepared between acts. We plan to explain how to make the GOHEI that the performers hold during the dance and the CHIMICHI that adorn the stage.
BICCHU KAGURA often continues throughout the night, and there is a culture in which the audience also prepares lunch boxes and sake to enjoy the KAGURA performance. For Mikazuki KAGURA, tickets with a box lunch (advance purchase only) are also available. Please enjoy the KAGURA performance while enjoying a meal made from local BISEI town ingredients.
The International dark place BISEI town's symbolic BISEI Observatory is located near the venue. The night of the crescent moon is also a good night for astronomical observation. Please enjoy star-gazing at the observatory after watching KAGURA.
